Spelman College Cuts Ties With Bill Cosby

The historically black women’s college in Atlanta said that it would end the endowed professorship funded by the comedian and his wife, Camille Cosby. The professorship had been suspended since December. While Spelman’s brief statement did not provide a reason, the college’s decision comes one week after a damning decade-old deposition was published by the New York Times.

In the deposition, Cosby acknowledges obtaining drugs to give to women with whom he wanted to have sex with. Though Cosby maintains that the drug use and sex were consensual, nearly two dozen women have now accused the actor of rape and sexual assault.

“The William and Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Endowed Professorship at Spelman College has been discontinued,” Spelman said in a statement on Saturday. The college also announced that they returned “related funds” to the Clara Elizabeth Jackson Carter Foundation, an organization established by Camille Cosby. The BBC estimates that the “related funds” are worth $20 million, a huge sum for a small liberal arts school.

CNN points out that the Cosbys have a long history with Spelman. Two of their daughters, Erika and Evan, attended the renowned college.
