In a panel discussion of the Television Critics Association, NBC’s Fred Gaudelli – who also executive produces the network’s “Sunday Night Football” and “Thursday Night Football” games – said all Super Bowl protests will be shown live because they’re “what’s happening,” according to an AdWeek account:
“The Super Bowl is a live event … and when you’re covering a live event, you’re covering what’s happening. So if there are players that choose to kneel, they will be shown live.”
“It’s certainly possible” there could be player protests during the worldwide broadcast of the pre-game rendition of the National Anthem, he says. And, if there are, NBC will show and identify the protesting players and characterize their agenda, Gaudelli said:
“We could cover it the same way we would cover it on a Sunday night game or a Thursday night game.” NBC would show it, identify the athlete, explain “in a very concise way” why they are kneeling “and then get on with the game.”
Last year, the Super Bowl was broadcast in 180 countries and 25 different languages worldwide and viewed by 111 million Americans.
