Sydney Jay Interview

Black Truth News:

You label yourself as a vocalist. That means that you got some skills. Explain to me how do you distinguish yourself from other artists who don’t have the skills you have?

Sydney Jay:   I introduce myself as a vocalist, that’s something I purposefully do. First and foremost, I think I have talent and it is skill that I have worked at. It is something that I have studied and continue to study. I’m always trying to learn and grow. And I feel like nowadays in the music industry, a lot of music is about your image. It’s a lot about vibes, and having that vibe. But I want to go back to having skills, go back to reaching people. That’s why a lot of old school music still resonates with people to the point when they hear it; they are like ‘that’s my song.’ I want to give that vibe, to reach people and make stuff to put a chill up their spine. I feel like I’m one of those artists that have those capabilities. It’s just not auto-tune; it’s just not me taking my clothes off.  It is skill that actually reaches out to you because if you throw me in the studio, and tell me what you want; I can give you that. I’m not just going to what I can. No offence to any rapper, but for example someone like Future. He just doing what his sound is, it is unique and people like it. But he is not a vocalist.

BTN: How tough is that to let people know that? Is there a stigma or barrier when presenting your skills to people?

SJ: I think there is definitely a stigma just because everyone and their grandmother are doing music nowadays (laughs). So I feel like the only way to show a person is to do it for them.  You can say you have this many plays, this many fans. Get likes on Instagram and Facebook all day long; but when it comes to the actual singing and you blow someone away right there. You create a real life fan. That’s when you start distinguishing yourself.

BTN: You know you set yourself up right?

SJ: Yeah, I know I did. I always do.

BTN: OK. Well I’m going to save that for the grand finale! In the meantime, tell the people what is coming up next for you?

SJ: March 19th my first official single “Fade Away” will be dropping. And it is going through iTunes, Spotify, Amazon. So right now we are just preparing for that.  Doing promo, we are working on a video, and I’m working to go on a college tour.  I just got doing vocals for an artist that was on ABC and she is super amazing. So yeah, I’m just putting out my official music and not being in the background anymore.

BTN: How does that feel?

SJ: It’s scary, because you see the people around you getting to where they are at. And you are like I have to step out at some point. I don’t want to be in that position forever. As great as it’s been, and as much it has taught me; can’t be stagnate. So it’s exciting.

BTN: Cool. I know you mentioned your Soundcloud, can you give us the link and let us know where else we can find your material?

SJ: Once again my name is Sydney Jay. My Soundcloud is Supersyd369. My Twitter and Instagram are both the same @SydJayMusic. My Facebook is Sydney Jay and you probably Google it and it will pop up.
