I always wondered why doctors would tell you to take all your antibiotics; even if you feel better. Martin Llewelyn, a a professor in infectious diseases at Britain’s University of Sussex, seems to agree. He wrote an article in the British Medical Journal that refutes the age old adage. He noted that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has replaced the label of taking antibiotics from “complete the course” to “exactly as prescribed.” Not only does taking antibiotics longer than necessary increase the risk of developing a resistance; it is not supported by scientific evidence.
