The Founder of Black Enterprise Magazine, Earl Graves Sr. Dead at the Age of 85

On Monday, April 6th, Earl Graves Sr. passed away at the age of 85 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Graves was the founder of Black Enterprise Magazine, which is the first publication to focus on Black entrepreneurs. He founded the publication in 1970 after previously serving in the military for three years.

“The time was ripe for a magazine devoted to economic development in the African American community,” Graves wrote in his best-selling book “How to Succeed in Business Without Being White.” “The publication was committed to the task of educating, inspiring and uplifting its readers. My goal was to show them how to thrive professionally, economically and as proactive, empowered citizens.” Graves is survived by his three sons Earl Jr., Johnny and Michael and eight grandchildren.
