Top Recruit Nkemdiche Backs Off Clemson Pledge

Lenny Gregory, Nkemdiche’s position coach at Grayson (Ga.) High, confirmed the reports to Rivals.com in an email.

“Robert does not want to talk about his college decisions until his senior season is complete,” Gregory said. “Robert will take his five official visits and will make a decision after visiting the five schools he decides to visit.”

Over the summer, Nkemdiche announced he was going to join fellow teammates David Kamara and Wayne Gallman at Clemson. But recently his mother has expressed her displeasure with the decision, saying that neither she nor Nkemdiche’s father were consulted before the commitment was made, and made it very clear she would prefer Nkemdiche join his brother Denzel at Ole Miss.

Thursday afternoon, Nkemdiche said on Twitter that he will be in Oxford this weekend. Last Saturday, he was on hand at Georgia for the Rebels’ loss to the Bulldogs. Ole Miss plays host to Vanderbilt on Saturday night.

Speculation as to how serious the commitment to the ACC school began almost immediately following the news of his commitment surfaced.

The decommitment from Clemson leads most to believe that Nkemdiche will indeed elect to sign with Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss on National Signing Day and join his brother, who is starring at outside linebacker for the SEC school.

Losing Nkemdiche drops Clemson from 11th to 14th in the current Rivals.com class of 2013 team recruiting rankings.
