Voting Rights Celebrated in August

Similarly, the 26th Amendment only outlaws discrimination in voting on the basis of AGE.

So the struggle for voting rights will not be complete until we add a positive individual or citizenship “right to vote amendment” to the Constitution. Currently, we have a “states’ rights” voting system with 50 state (plus DC) and 13,000 “separate and unequal” voting jurisdictions.

Is an amendment guaranteeing individual voting rights important? If Al Gore had won more popular votes in Florida than George Bush in 2000, he would have received all of Florida’s Electoral Votes and been elected President. It is likely that George Bush was elected over Al Gore because we don’t have an individual right to vote in the Constitution. Such an amendment would have insured that all of Florida’s votes were counted.
