White Sox Quietly Becoming Contendors with No One Watching

Widely picked to finish no better than third in the AL Central, the White Sox instead have spent most of the season in first place. They should be turning more heads than they have, but they’re rolling along without much fanfare—even in Chicago.

Only 24,247 showed up at U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday night, and that included the typical large contingent of Yankees fans who seem to be everywhere. Besides enjoying a night of ideal weather, those not in attendance would have seen the White Sox beat the Yankees, 7-3, in a game that displayed three reasons for their success this season.

General manager Kenny Williams didn’t do much in the offseason besides confuse much of the baseball world by saying the White Sox were looking at a rebuilding effort, then kind of changing his mind. The team’s offseason moves were more notable for who left—namely manager Ozzie Guillen and ace Mark Buehrle—than who arrived.
