Why are so many Black Women getting Plastic Surgery?

You look at some old school films in the 70’s, or just some old photos of your mom or grandmother and see that a lot of our Black Women wore their hair in an Afro. Or as they used to like to call it, the “Natural.” Embracing your Blackness was the thing back then.

During the 80’s and 90’s we saw that trend shift to something else. Although, I do remember in the 90’s and early 2000’s, seeing Black women rebuke the stereotypical vision of what beauty is supposed to look like. Our women rebelled against the idea that they had to wear weave in their heads to look similar to their European counterparts.

Despite the historical mini cultural revolutions from our women, they still face discrimination. Black women in Hollywood usually get paid less than white actresses. Darker shade women are a lot of times overlooked for lighter shade women. The bottom line is that our women sometimes have to face bigger hurdles than almost everyone in our society.

I wonder are those factors contributing to the current trend of so many Black Women getting cosmetic surgery. I been around for a long time, but the last few years is the most I have seen or heard so many females that are altering or trying to change their appearance.

From 2005 to 2013, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that black patients increased by 56 percent.  According to the 2016 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report, black people accounted for 8 percent of all plastic-surgery procedures in the United States — that’s double the percentage from 1997. Just to put that in perspective, Black people only make up about 12 percent of the overall population of the United States.

I wouldn’t say that it is a disturbing trend, but it is a cause to pause and ask the question: Why are so many Black Women getting or considering cosmetic surgery?

I got a few answers, that you the reader can agree, disagree or just give me some more insight on.
