As head of the Sinaloa Cartel, he was considered by the US to be the world’s most powerful drug trafficker with a net worth of around US$1bn (£680m).
Meanwhile, Mexican authorities on Saturday arrested another alleged top drug dealer, Cesar Gastelum Serrano, who is reported to be a key player in a cartel smuggling cocaine to the US, the world’s biggest consumer of the Class A drug.
He is alleged to have close links with Ismael Zambada, the current leader the Sinaloa cartel.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in December 2012 promising to regain control of the country from its dangerous drug lords.
A number of the most senior of them, including Guzman, have since been arrested.
