A Big Win for Obama–but Perilously High Stakes for 2nd Term

Barack Obama, elected Tuesday over his challenger, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney, faces an economic recovery that has yet to fully ignite, a looming agreement to an irresponsible set of deep and indiscriminate government cuts, a sinking European economy and military uncertainty in the Middle East.

It’s worth wondering what exactly Obama “won” Tuesday night, other than the continued responsibility for a host of problems that don’t offer easy solutions.

Americans gave Roosevelt’s Democrats super majorities in both the Senate and the House. He could do what he wanted. Opposition would come only from within his own party, not from an intransigent rival.
