Apple HomeKit Likely Won’t Launch Until Next Year

So if all is said and done for 2014, where in the world is HomeKit and why didn’t see an Apple TV software update, which is rumored to include HomeKit compatibility and be the hub of the smart home platform) at the presentation?

There’s one simple answer: HomeKit is just not ready. Sources confirm that device manufacturers are still in the early stages of becoming HomeKit certified by Apple, and we probably won’t see the first batch of products for Apple’s home automation platform until next year.

Apple first announced its HomeKit platform in June. HomeKit will eventually allow users to control locks, lights, cameras, doors, thermostats, plugs and switches at home. Although developers and manufacturers are building products for it now, it takes time to do so — much more so than integrating apps for Apple’s work-in-progress HealthKit platform.

Even still, we don’t know too much about the timeline of when the first HomeKit gadgets will launch, but sources believe the first batch could pop up as early as at the 2015 International CES in Las Vegas in January.
