Black Truth News Attends Humanitarian Award Celebration: “There is Love in the Heart of the City”

third photoThis was a Humanitarian Award celebration, “that honored the individuals that spread love throughout the city.” The promotional flyer I received mentioned a special performance by rap pioneer Kurtis Blow who never showed up. I’m not sure it was a schedule conflict or a case of janky promotion, but despite his absence, it turned out to be a good event. There was a performance by Lil Prophet, a nine-year-old emcee who had a positive message in his music. In fact, all the performers had a positive message and insightful lyrics in their music. You were able to hear the passion in the voice of a brother name Phenom and the honesty in the spoken word artists of Kuumba Lynx.  second photo

I have footage from each performance and each one can be viewed here. At the very least, the negativity surrounding the Englewood area was infiltrated with some hope last Friday. Even if that hope only shined for a brief moment, it should have provided optimism to the participants and the audience in attendance. Because what this event showed everyone there is that if the people in the Black Community come together in the name of unity and prosperity, then the sky is the limit.
