Clashes in Ukraine Turn Deadly

Demonstrators set fire to piles of tires, sending plumes of black smoke through the air.

Protests, which have drawn hundreds of thousands, began in November when President Viktor Yanukovych walked away from a European Union integration pact and instead sealed a multibillion-dollar bailout package from Russia.

The U.S. embassy in Kiev said it had revoked the visas of several Ukrainians linked to violence against protesters in November and December. It didn’t name them, citing U.S. confidentiality laws, but added it was “considering further action against those responsible for the current violence.” U.S. officials have said they are considering asset freezes as well as visa bans.

The heads of three main opposition parties were set to meet Mr. Yanukovych early afternoon, according to a post on the Twitter TWTR -0.24% feed of one of the leaders, Arseniy Yatsenyuk. But it is unclear what control the opposition has over the more militant members of the crowd, who say they started the attack Sunday as they were tired of what they called the opposition’s too-passive stance.
