DeVry Closed: ‘Threat’ Leads University to Cancel Classes Monday

As a result, officials closed all Chicago area DeVry and Chamberlain College of Nursing locations Monday.

The school on Sunday was “informed of a potential security issue involving the Chicago area” campuses, DeVry said in a statement. “Based on the advice of our security team and local law enforcement” the school decided to close its Chicago-area campuses.

DeVry is working with the Chicago Police on the matter, the school said.

Officer Michael Sullivan, a Chicago Police Department spokesman, said DeVry “received an unspecified threat and they made the decision to shut down several campuses.”

He confirmed police are working with the school to investigate the matter.

Monday morning, the parking lot at the DeVry campus at 3300 N. Campbell Ave. held several cars. Several police cars also were parked nearby.

Kashena Woods, 22, of Chatham knocked at one of the doors of the University around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning seeking to enter her morning class.

“Nobody from school told me and none of my friends on social networks posted anything about it,” Woods said.

She said the school usually sends an email or calls when school is canceled. Paris Jackson, 18, also showed up to school with “no clue” either about the closure.

“The fact that they didn’t let us know is surprising. As soon as they know [about cancelations] they usually send an email and call,” Jackson said.

Jackson has attended the school for more than a year and said this is the first time she’s heard of a threat at the school, though she remembers several from high school at Lane Tech High School.

“I don’t really take them to serious, but I do hope [DeVry] gets it together,” Jackson said.

She added the school had performed emergency drills last week that left her confident in case of an emergency at the school.

“I’d be scared, but prepared,” Jackson said.
