GHB is commonly linked to incidents of “date rape,” but Porrata said zolpidem has become a drug of choice for sexual predators or serial rapists because, despite being a prescription medication, it is easily obtained.
“For a sports guy, Ambien is something that they would more likely be known to have,” said Porrata. Professional athletes maintain grueling travel schedules as well as punishing physical training programs. “Plus, Ambien is totally legit to have since you’re not carrying around illicit drugs.”
According to the press release from the L.A. County D.A.’s office, Sharper met two women at a West Hollywood nightclub on Oct. 30 and invited them to another party. Sharper brought the two women back to his hotel room, gave each a shot of alcohol, which caused them both to pass out. “Jane Doe #1 allegedly woke up naked hours later with Sharper sexually assaulting her. The second woman allegedly awoke and ‘interrupted his actions,'” according to the D.A.’s press release, and refers to a motion filed by prosecutors Friday that requested Sharper’s bail be increased to $10 million.
The press release details a similar chain of events Jan. 14 and early Jan. 15, when Sharper met two separate women at the same L.A. club, invited them back to his hotel room and drugged them with alcohol shots. At least one of the women believes she was sexually assaulted by Sharper, and both sought medical treatment.
According to multiple reports, there are open investigations of Sharper in New Orleans, Tempe, Ariz. and Las Vegas for near identical, alleged drug-rape incidents.
Sharper did not enter a plea during a court appearance Friday, as his arraignment was pushed back to Feb. 20. One of his lawyers, Blair Berk, said outside the courtroom that his legal team hoped their client would be “fully exonerated before this case is concluded.”
