Kelis lets it be known that her beef with Beyoncé sampling her song “was personal on many levels”

When Kelis caught wind of it, she went on social media to voice her displeasure with Beyoncé and her former collaborators Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes.

Following her Instagram posts, Beyoncé’s team removed the samples from the song. That move prompted Kelis to get back on social media to share more thoughts on the situation.

She responded to some fans of Beyonce who pointed out her songs have been sampled in the past. She answered by saying “like I’ve said, it’s all a problem. Every single time. But this was personal on many levels which people don’t understand and I didn’t care to go further into. But yes. It is all a problem that I am going to fix.”

Another fan commented that “Why can’t we as sisters ever settle anything behind closed doors without giving others the satisfaction of making it look like a feud? I’m so curious to know and understand.” Kelis responded, “it’s bigger then [sic] that.”

We are not sure what is her gripe with Beyoncé beyond the song sample. However, she has spoken out against the Neptunes in the past. In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, she said she never made profit off the albums she did with the Neptunes.  “I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” Kelis said. “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it.’ I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’”
