Mixtape Review: Alias John Brown Presents: “Retribution”

The mix-tape has 21 tracks on there, which is a lot if you ask me. The good thing is a couple of the tracks are short, which kept the music moving along, but those shorter songs were some of the best on the album. Tracks like “Still Alive” and “Hurt so Bad” was where AJB shine the most; they were introspective, well put together with tight beats and vocals but they were presented as snippets. On the other hand tracks like “Best Tree” and “Thirsty” seem too long and out of place on the album.

I did like the fact there were different producers, but all of their production didn’t fit John Brown’s flow, which is important to the listener. The best 1-2 punch on there was when AJB teamed up with Big D Beats; songs like “Knock Em out Da Box” and “The Fallen” provided great rhythm and energy and gave the CD a little more edge. Those songs allowed you to tolerate the longer songs and the posse cuts.

Overall I think Alias John Brown’s new mix-tape “Retribution: Street Campaign” is a good listen. There is a little something on there for everybody and I recommend you check it out.
