Nelson Mandela Leaves Millions To Family, Staff And Schools

During the press conference, Moseneke indicated that emotions ran high among family members who attended the reading of the will.  He did indicate that the overall mood was good and that nearly the entire Mandela family was present.  There have been some issues in the past among Mandela’s children and grandchildren regarding who would lead the family and who was entitled to benefit from the investments Mandela had made during his lifetime.

According to the will, Mandela’s estate includes a house in Johannesburg, as well as, one in his home province in the rural Eastern Cape, as well as, royalties from book sales.  Mandela’s third wife Graca Machel is entitled to half of the Mandela estate, but she may waive that entitlement in exchange for specified assets including properties located in Mozambique, which is where she is originally from.

All of Mandela’s children each received $300,000, as well as some of his grandchildren.  Specifics of the will also indicate that some of Mandela’s estate would be split up among various trusts that he had set up including a trust set up for his family that would provide for over 30 of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  The family of Mandela’s deceased son Makgatho will reside in the home in Houghton, Johannesburg where Mandela passed away.

Mandela also left money for his personal assistant, Zelda La Grange, as well as, the various schools and educational institutions he attended over the years.  The African National Conference that was such an integral part of his anti-apartheid work will receive part of the royalties produced by the estate.  The will was originally written in 2004 and was amended in 2008.  May Mandela rest in peace and his legacy live on to teach generations to come what it means to never give up on one’s convictions about what is right and wrong.
