The incident caused a lot of controversy and many people shared their opinion. The backlash caused the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) to conduct an investigation an issue a statement via Twitter. Maloney will “not be assigned to any events until this matter has been reviewed more thoroughly in order to avoid potential distractions for the competing wrestlers…” the statement read.
Maloney has history of being a racist. In 2016 Mahoney he was sanctioned for calling another referee a nigger.

Maloney claimed he didn’t remember using the word, but later apologized. In addition to the investigation by the NJSIAA, the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights opened an investigation.
