The Problem Black People have with Stephen A. Smith

Recently, former NBA player Stephon Marbury called Smith an “Uncle Tom.” Marbury made this reference in response to SAS comments regarding NBA player Kyrie Irving.

Smith responded to Marbury on his show First Take by saying “I’m not going to insult Stephon Marbury.” He continued:   “I will say Stephon Marbury has had a problem with me since 2009 because we thought he was a bit bizarre when he was eating Vaseline, literally on video like it was a bunch of cheeseburgers.”

Former NBA player Stephen Jackson also had words for Smith and shared them on social media.

Plus, it wasn’t the first time he has been called a disrespectful name by another public figure. Veteran rapper Willie D called him a coon during an interview with VladTV.

It should be noted that SAS primarily talks about NBA basketball. The sport where almost 75% of the players are Black. This means there is a higher probability that he would have criticism towards Black athletes since they comprise most of his subject matter. It also bears mention that he is on a daily show that analyzes almost every game these athletes play.

The microscope placed on the athletes, along with social media has made it almost impossible for athletes to have a down moment or slump without it getting blown out of proportion. This dynamic has created some tense moments between Stephen A. Smith and NBA players.
