Why do we care about Michael Sam?

I refer to a story in the Bible where a woman who committed adultery was brought to Jesus in the temple while he was teaching. The people who brought the woman demanded she be stoned to death for her transgressions. But Jesus made a statement that has stuck with me in my daily life, he said “he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”

“When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” (St. John 8:7-11)

I understand we live in a judgmental society, and I’m not going to act like I’m not aware of the stigma that surrounds the LGBT community or the homophobia that exists in our communities. But if Michael Sam never announces who he likes to sleep with, how would we know? Being gay is not something that his stamp on your forehead at birth. When I saw him during the interview, he looked like every other athlete that gave an interview on ESPN. Would people discriminate against him if he didn’t make the announcement? How would they know?
