A Black Lives Matter Activist Reportedly Killed Himself in Front of the Ohio State Capitol

It’s unclear why McCarrel killed himself, but around 3 p.m. on Monday, he posted to Facebook: “My demons won today. I’m sorry.” Just last week McCarrel attended the NAACP Image Awards in California, where he received a Radio One Hometown Champion award. He had worked as a youth mentor, according to the Dispatch, helped feed Ohio’s homeless and played an active role in local Black Lives Matter protests.

“He impacted so many people, touched so many lives,” his mother, Leatha Wellington, said.

His final tweet, posted just after 1 p.m. on Monday, said: 

McCarrel’s death comes as the country continues to face a steady drumbeat of news about police shootings of African-American men. On Monday morning, for instance, a police officer in Austin, Texas reportedly shot and killed a black teenager who was naked and unarmed.
