BJ The Chicago Kid on Prince’s Death, TDE & Paying Homage to D’Angelo

Prince was an inspiration to everyone, especially those in the music community. He did it all: funk, soul, R&B, rock, hip-hop, dance, and much more. For BJ he doesn’t remember a day when he didn’t know who Prince was, even as a youngster. “It’s like Michael Jackson, or Michael Jordan, I don’t remember not knowing them,” he said. Going on to name his five favourite Prince songs and detailing where he was when he heard the news about his passing, it’s obvious the Purple One was a big inspiration to BJ.

Another of BJ’s inspirations is D’Angelo. Speaking on the tribute EP he made for the ‘Brown Sugar’ singer, he said: “Most of us wait to tweet about you when you die, when you’re in the hospital, or on your way out. Fuck that! He’s breathing. Give my dawg his flowers. D, we love you bro. We appreciate everything you’ve done and everything you continue to do for us.”

Also touching upon his relationship with the TDE family – Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q in particular – the upcoming TV series Shots Fired that he’s a part of, and also Solange’s new album, A Seat at the Table, take a look at what BJ had to say.
