Hank Aaron Says He Would Skip White House Visit & Fully Supports Players Who Do It Now

Hank Aaron recently stated he would not go to the White House if he were on a championship-winning team today. When the topic came up during his “Hank Aaron Champion for Justice Awards” in Atlanta, he said he fully supported the players of today and their decision to skip out on a visit to the White House.

“There’s nobody there I want to see,” Aaron told The Atlanta-Journal Constitution. “I can understand where the players are coming from. I really do. I understand they have their own issues and things they feel conviction about. They have a right to that, and I probably would be the same way, there’s no question about it.”

The hall of famer’s comments come just weeks after President Donald Trump rescinded his invite to the Philadelphia Eagles some 24 hours before the visit after finding out less than 10 people would be showing up to greet him and take in the festivities. Following that announcement, he stated neither the Golden State Warriors or Cleveland Cavaliers would be invited after the NA Finals concluded in response to a few comments from stars on both teams who stated they wouldn’t go as well.

The 25-time All-Star who hit 755 career home runs went on to acknowledge the impact players of today can have and he wished he would’ve said more during his day.

“To be honest, I feel somewhat guilty that I didn’t do possibly as much as I could have done,” Aaron said. “We didn’t get to where we are today because we kept our mouth closed or scratched our head and sat and didn’t do anything. If you have an opinion, then you should voice it and let people know that is your opinion and you’re not speaking for anybody but yourself.”
