The episode aims to tell Till’s story through his mother’s perspective and her fight for social justice after her son’s murder in 1955. It’s speculated that his lynching in a Mississippi town at 14 years old at the hands of two white men happened after he allegedly spoke to a 21-year-old white woman. Till-Mobley died in 2003 but spent her life advocating for her son. During his funeral, Mobley reportedly requested an open-casket.
That request spurred controversy because it showed how mutilated his body was after the lynching. According to Deadline, the casket is on display at The Smithsonian.
Till-Mobley also made a successful speaking tour with the NAACP to talk about the injustice her son endured. Prior to working on this project, Smith and Jay-Z had another series in the works at HBO, which was set to feature Till-Mobley’s story as well.
There’s no set premiere date for Women of the Movement.
