Lisa Smith-Batchen becomes first woman to run 584-mile journey through desert

woman desert 4What do you want people to take away from this amazing adventure?

My goal was to touch 1 million people and have them donate $1 each. To help others understand that even $1 does and will make a difference in the life of others. How easy it is for us to take for granted all that we have and the abundance of resources we have available to us at any time. My hope is that others will think when they drink a glass of clean water or brush their teeth just how fortunate they are to have clean water. I am one person doing my part and my share. We all have gifts and talents. Mine is running. I hope others will use their gifts and talents to reach out and help others. At the end of life, I can’t take my running shoes with me, but I can take what I have done to help others—and they can too.

What advice do you have for other athletes considering running for a cause?

Step out and get going. Start with finding the right cause for you and what your heart is passionate about. Start with a 5K, and ask your friends and family to support you. The people who love and adore you will always support you. Don’t be afraid to ask people to help or donate. I learned that people want to help, they just don’t know how. If we don’t ask people to help we are not giving them the opportunity to say yes or no.

What’s next?

Funny you should ask. As I sit here now, I feel like going for a run! I do have plans for another big journey, but I am keeping in under wraps for now. The journey starts with the first step.
