Man Charged In Double Murder That Killed Toddler Lavontay White

Devon Swan, 26, was charged with first degree murder is the shooting that killed 2-year-old Lavontay White Jr. and his uncle Lazaric Collins, 26. A third victim, a 20-year-old woman who is pregnant, was also wounded in the shooting that was recorded live on Facebook.  

Additional arrests are expected in the case, said Anthony Guglielmi, CPD spokesman. Police Supt. Eddie Johnson, CPD detectives and Rev. Michael Pfleger are expected to provide additional details on the the charges at a noon press conference Saturday. 

Police believe Collins was the intended target of the attack which stemmed from a dispute between Collins and a group of individuals, police said. 

Swan has a prior history with the Chicago Police Department and has been arrested nine times previously on a variety of offenses including armed robbery, illegal gun charges and narcotics possession.

About 1:30 p.m. Feb. 14, a gunman opened fire on the man, woman and toddler as they were driving down an alley behind the 2300 block of South Kenneth Avenue in the North Lawndale, police said.

White, 2, was shot in his head. Though the boy was briefly revived, he ultimately died at Stroger Hospital at 2:43 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Collins, the toddler’s uncle, who police described as a documented gang member, was also shot in his head and died.

His 20-year-old pregnant girlfriend was shot in her stomach but lived. Her unborn child also survived, police said.
