Robert Maxfield was convicted of killing Yetunde Price in 2003 in a drive-by shooting in Compton. Three years later, he was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for voluntary manslaughter, reported the Daily Mail.
This year, he was released on parole for good behavior after only serving 12 years in prison.
On the night of her murder, Yetunde was riding in the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s SUV. As Yetunde and her boyfriend, Rolland Wormley, drove by a gang drug house, Maxfield, a member of the Southside Crips, fired about a dozen rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle into the car.
The 31-year-old was shot in the back of the head.
According to police, Wormley, who managed to escape unharmed, was the intended target of the shooting.
Yetunde was a registered nurse, co-owned a beauty salon with a friend and also served as a part-time personal assistant to her sisters, whose tennis careers were on the rise.
Venus and Serena were so overcome by grief after the killing they took a long break from their careers to heal. At one point, there were even rumors Serena nearly quit playing, reported the Daily Mail.
Once they recovered from the tragic loss, Venus and Serena opened the Yetunde Price Resource Center in Compton in 2016 in their sister’s honor. The center was created to help those affected by trauma and violence heal.
