Nas To Executive Produce “Street Dreams” Biographical Television Series

According to Deadline, the network has green-lit Street Dreams. “A show about music, family and the trials and tribulations of the Rap game, it tracks the ascent of Nas, a young man from the Queensbridge projects who will go on to become a famous rapper, as he evolves from young man to crack dealer to rapper to adult,” is how the publication describes the series, with the exclusive information. The one-hour episodic series will also be set in the early 1990s, the period when Nas, under the tutelage of Large Professor, Kool G Rap, and Rakim, would rise to become one of Hip-Hop’s most revered lyricists.

Jonathan Levine (The Wackness, Rush) is said to be finalizing a deal to produce. Originally, Street Dreamswas planned to debut through XBox Studios, which has since closed.

Last month, BET hosted a three-night telling of New Edition’s story. That event was a ratings milestone for the network. Dr. Dre, who has previously worked closely with Nas and his former group, The Firm, is working with Apple on a similar retelling adaptation of his own life.

“Street Dreams,” produced by The Trackmasters and featuring a Eurhythmics sample, was Nas’ highest charting single for more than a decade of his career. The 1996 music video was directed by Hype Williams, and paid homage to Martin Scorsese’s Casino film from one year prior.
