Ohio State wins national title, 42-20, over Oregon

“This team wasn’t supposed to do this,” OSU coach Urban Meyer said. “They fought through adversity and finished the year a great team.

“The made incredible improvement. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

osu champJones, once third on the depth chart and making just his third career start, was clutch at the controls. He consistently connected on big throws on third down. He escaped tackles like David Blaine sheds shackles. His 1-yard touchdown run at 4:49 of the second quarter gave OSU a 21-7 lead it would not relinquish.

“We felt like we could score whenever we wanted,” Jones said.

Jones completed 16 of 23 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a score. Elliott, the offensive star of the Sugar Bowl and Big Ten title games, again broke free for gashing gains, running for 246 yards and four touchdowns. Elliott had more than 600 yards rushing in his last three games.

“I knew going into the game that we wanted to run the ball,” said Elliott, who will be a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy next season. “We knew that our O-line was bigger and more physical than their defensive line. They played their butts off and paved the way for me.”
