Obama feels that some of the drug laws of the 90’s led to harsh and unjust prison sentences for hundreds of offenders. Since the summer of 2016, Obama has commuted the sentences of 775 offenders. He believes that these offenders need a second chance to rebuild their life, connect with their families, and act as good citizens in their communities.
Aside from commuting sentences, the president is seeking to reform the prisoners’ child support requirements. He feels that the current child support system places a burden on prisoners who are seeking to make a fresh start. Often, parents who have not paid child support can be jailed for non-payment. Obama feels that it is counter intuitive to release offenders and turn around and jail them because they haven’t been able to properly care for their families.
So, the president is working hard to do all he can to pass this bit of legislation before leaving office in January. He has expressed that he plans on working until the day he has to surrender the Oval Office to the next president.
