Raptors president Masai Ujiri ‘pushed, struck deputy in face’ during title celebration: police

Ujiri pushed and struck a sheriff’s deputy in the faceafter he was denied access to the court and the team’s celebration due to a lack of correct credentials, police told the San Francisco Chronicle.

“[The deputy] did not know who the man was and asked for the credential, and that’s when he tried to push past our deputy, and our deputy pushed him back, and there was another push that moved up and struck our deputy in the face,” Sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly told the San Francisco Chronicle. “At that point, several bystanders intervened and the executive did ultimately get back onto the court without displaying credentials.

“It’s not like we were going to chase him down. He had a right to be there, but he didn’t follow the credential policy.”

The Sheriff’s office classified the incident as battery on an officer, which is a misdemeanor.

Ujiri has been with the Raptors since 2013. His decisions to replace coach of the year Dwane Casey with Nick Nurse and for trading beloved guard DeMar DeRozan for Kawhi Leonard were the final crucial pieces that brought the Raptors an NBA title.
