Russian photo of MH17 being shot down by Ukraine fighter jet may be fake: Report

Coinciding with the start of the G20 summit, the meeting of major developed and emerging countries, the TV station claims to have received from anonymous sources a satellite image showing a MiG-29 (a jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union) firing a missile towards the Boeing 777 on July 17.

“We have at our disposal sensational photographs presumably made by a foreign spy satellite in the last seconds of the Malaysian Boeing’s flight over Ukraine,” Channel One presenter Dmitry Borisov said.”The pictures support that version which has hardly been heard in the West.”

Experts quoted in the program say that the picture is real, but several commentators who have examined the photographs have described them as forgeries. Dutch researchers studying the case have never found evidence of the presence of other aircraft. The most widespread suspicion, although not proven, is that pro-Russian separatists fired a surface-to-air missile (SAM), killing all 298 people aboard the Boeing 777.

Russian television described the find as “sensational,” ahead of the G20 summit. The U.S. State Department on Friday dismissed the Russian TV reports as yet another “preposterous” attempt by Moscow to “obfuscate the truth and ignore ultimate responsibility for the tragic downing of MH17.”

The Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, recently asked the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, some tough questions about the disappearance of MH17. He also questioned Putin on the widespread belief that pro-Russian separatists are deliberately being supported with arms from military forces in Moscow. Russia denies the charge and calls for an independent investigation to consider other possibilities.
