SNL Cut This Rick James Sketch With Dave Chappelle Because Trump Won

It’s been more than a decade since Chappelle’s Show originally ran the sketch, and last November the world nearly saw Chappelle revive his James character. In an interview on WNYC’s TheLeonard Lopate Show, comedian Neal Brennan said he and Michael Che wrote a Rick James sketch for Chappelle on Weekend Update.

“It was gonna be a Rick James Weekend Update piece, about how he was glad that Bill Clinton—I’m sorry, Donald Trump, lost,” he said. “Then me and Che had to rewrite that sketch. We ended up not doing it.”

Yes, it’s depressing, but Brennan ended up instead writing one of the episode’s highlights that actually aired: the “Election Night” sketch, which showed a bunch of white liberals and Chappelle and Chris Rock watching the election results. And even without Rick James, the episode as a whole should be listed among SNL‘s best, thanks in large part to Chappelle’s poignant and hilarious opening monologue.
