Why are People Hating on Spike Lee’s New Chiraq Movie?

chiraq 2I believe the exposure will help the community and the city. Not just from the aspect of shedding light on the violence in the city; but from a more tangible perspective. People young and old will have a chance to be around a movie set, something they never probably dreamed of. Some people will be inspired by this. Not necessarily by the movie itself.

The process of creating the film will hopefully lend to an increase of cash flow in the area. And provide aspiring local talent the opportunity to shine on the big screen. I saw someone post a picture of the casting call line in Chicago for the film. The line was what you expect for a film of this caliber, hundreds of people lined up for a shot to get chosen.

I wonder have the people who are protesting this movie considered these factors while protesting. To be fair with those people, I believe they are protesting more against the name of the film as oppose to the film itself. No one knows who started to say the name Chiraq first, but it was popularized by the youth in the streets of Chicago. Rapper and Chief Keef affiliate Lil Reese could be heard saying it on his song Traffic a few years back.
