Twenty-two years later I am still searching for answers about black -on-black homicides:
On June 27, 2012, a 7- year old girl named Heaven Sutton was selling candy on her front lawn in Chicago’s North Austin neighborhood when she was fatally shot in the back.
On August 18, 2012 six people were murdered across the city– a new record. The following weekend saw nine homicides and almost 40 shootings
Despite the fact that President Obama was re-elected in 2012 the homicide rate in Chicago is on track to 504 murders. At least one person a day is murdered in the windy city. Most of it is gang related. According to the Chicago Tribune “Blacks make up only 33 percent of Chicago’s population, yet they account for nearly 78 per cent of the homicides. African-Americans have made up 70 percent of homicide victims in Chicago every year for the last two decades.”
Unlike Walter Williams, a black libertarian columnist, who writes frequently about race and crime,” Each year, roughly 7,000 blacks are murdered, noting that life is more dangerous for a young black man than a tour of duty in Afghanistan.”
I don’t agree with Williams, that silence by President Obama and civil rights leaders are the root cause of the violence. I do agree with writer R. Cort Kirkwood when he writes that” Blacks are exploited by other blacks and liberals to build political power but I don’t agree that” blacks are victims of crime from other blacks because of the societal rot engendered by these policies.”
